Nettle Weevil

Nettle Weevil

Latin name: Phyllobius pomaceus

The Nettle Weevil is a slender weevil, measuring around 7–9 mm in length with metallic bluish-green scales. This can be combined with variations of gold, blue and copper colour, on its wing cases or elytra. Older specimens can look almost black as the scales easily rub. Larvae measure up to 8 mm in length, with a creamy white coloured body and dark head and feed on the roots of their host plants. There most common host plant is the Nettle but they also like Meadow Sweet. Adults can be seen from April to late June and are common throughout England and Wales, with a few records from Scotland.
