Matt Bolete
Latin name: Boletus pruinatus
The Matt Bolete has a cap that ranges in colour. Most often dark red-brown or chestnut, but can be light brown, greyish-brown, olive-brown and occasionally dark grey that appears black. The stem is yellow and covered with fine red dots, blueing slightly towards the stem base. The cap is usually slightly convex turning flatter, with a wrinkled surface that has the texture of suede. The flesh in both the cap and stem is bright yellow when cut, turning greenish-blue.
The stems of young specimens are golden yellow and the caps are mid to dark brown, with a purplish tint and are covered in a hoary bloom. This is gradually lost as the cap expands.
They can be found from July through to November in mixed, deciduous woodland, particularly common under beech trees.
It is a widespread species in Britain, but not particularly common.
