Grey Heron
Latin name: Ardea cinerea
The Grey Heron is quite common and can be found standing watching for fish, stalking through shallow water or most often flying off at the first disturbance.
They are rather large birds at over a 1.5 metres tall on their long spindly legs. Grey Herons are incredibly stealthy hunters that can spy fish passing in the water and pluck them out at great speed. It is not uncommon to actually see Herons catching fish or pausing with them in their mouths before consuming them in one big gulp.
