Common Darter

Common Darter

Latin name: Sympetrum striolatum

Very common as the name suggests, the Common Darter can be bright red but colour varies to quite pale or paler with red areas. The Common Darter lives in Britain but we also have visiting migrants of the same species from Europe. The Common Darter lives around ponds or slow flowing water and can often be found basking in the sun, usually on pale surfaces.
