Broad Bodied Chaser male

Broad Bodied Chaser

Latin name: Libellula depressa

Males have a broad, blue abdomen with yellow patches, and females an all yellow abdomen. The Broad Bodied Chaser was once only found in southern England and Wales but has spread northward, possibly due to climate change. The blue colour is actually a pruinescence or pigment that develops on the male Broad Bodied Chaser as it matures creating a dusty-looking blue colour that reflects a lot of ultraviolet light.
