Kilmarnock is a town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It lies upon the River Irvine, approximately 16 miles (26 km) from Glasgow and 30 miles (48 km) from Edinburgh.
Kilmarnock was initially built around St. Marnoch’s Church which was completed sometime after 1366 but has since been largely rebuilt. Kilmarnock is the main town within East Ayrshire Council area, however its growth during many centuries has been relatively gradual. The local industries have typically been of a primary nature, although now there are also several large factories operating within the town that produce significant volumes of now high-tech material or medical equipment.

A comparatively modest settlement until the Industrial Revolution, Kilmarnock extended considerably from around 1800 onwards, requiring the opening of King Street, Portland Street, and Wellington Street. Added later was John Finnie Street, which is regarded as “one of the finest Victorian planned streets in Scotland.” The Sandbed Street Bridge is the oldest known surviving bridge in the area.
