Belturbet is located on the banks of the River Erne, which has long been one of Ireland’s most popular crossings.

It was formerly the capital of the Kingdom of East Breifne, a historic Irish kingdom that existed from 1256 to 1607 and was roughly equivalent to County Cavan. Belturbet was a stronghold of Gaelic culture and many key events in Irish history have been hosted here.
