Whitewebbs Country Park

Whitewebbs Country Park is a large green space located in the northern part of the London Borough of Enfield. Covering approximately 240 acres, the park consists of a mixture of woodlands, open grassland, streams, and small lakes, providing a varied landscape for walking, cycling, and wildlife observation. It is one of the key green areas on the urban fringe of north London and forms part of the wider Green Belt that separates London from Hertfordshire.

The park is named after the historic Whitewebbs Estate, which dates back to at least the 16th century. The area has links to royal hunting grounds and local legend suggests that Guy Fawkes may have met with fellow conspirators in the area before the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The main house on the estate, Whitewebbs House, is now a privately run pub and restaurant.

Whitewebbs is popular with walkers and nature enthusiasts due to its extensive network of footpaths and bridleways that wind through mature woodland and past streams fed by the Cuffley Brook. The woodland is home to a wide range of birds, and it’s not unusual to spot deer, foxes, and other wildlife. There is also a small lake with ducks and waterfowl, and several quiet glades and meadows that are ideal for picnicking.

Until 2021, part of the site included Whitewebbs Park Golf Course, which was operated by the local council but closed due to financial constraints. The future use of the former golf course land has been the subject of public discussion, with a focus on preserving public access and the natural character of the area.

Whitewebbs Country Park can be accessed by car, with a small parking area near the former golf course, and by foot from surrounding areas including Crews Hill and Forty Hill. The park is adjacent to other green spaces such as Hilly Fields Park and Forty Hall Estate, creating a large area of continuous countryside on the edge of London.

Overall, Whitewebbs Country Park is a valuable natural resource for the local area, offering an accessible retreat for outdoor recreation and a reminder of the area’s rural and historic roots.
