Upper Ball Grove Lodge
Ball Grove Park is an excellent area for wildlife Colne Water provides habitats for fish species such as trout. This provides a valuable food source for predatory birds such as kingfishers änd herons. The small dipper can be seen also on this stretch of river - you can see its bright white breast and bobbing motion as it hunts in the shallows for insects.
The old mill lodge provides a home for many species of wild birds. The ever present mallards and black-headed gulis can be seen. And in winter transient species such as the beautiful and colourful goosanders and tufted ducks can be found. During spring the lodge becomes a hive of activity as frogs, toads and news return to the water to mate
The woodland areas surrounding the picnic site also turn up their own delights and surprises Many common species of woodland and garden birds can be seen here, along with larger species such as Kestrels.
Sparrowhawks and tawny owls If you visit the site early in the morning or late evening you can often be rewarded with glimpse of a fox or the very shy roe deer.
