Tonbridge Castle
Tonbridge Castle
Tonbridge Castle dates back to around 1260 (soon after the Norman Conquest), when it was built by Richard de Clare, the third Earl of Hertford.
The castle is a motte and bailey type with a gatehouse that dates back to the 11th century.
The remains of the curtain wall and 13th Century gatehouse are easily seen, and the motte is still clearly visible. Tonbridge Castle is a great place to learn about medieval history.
Guided tours are available that include interactive displays, making Tonbridge Castle a great place to learn about medieval history.
