The Needles by Lucy Sugden Weaving Artist
The Needles
The Needles are chalk stacks rising from the sea off the western tip of the Isle of Wight.
Chalk stacks are the remaining portions of chalk cliffs that have eroded by sea and weathering on both sides. Stacks are often formed from collapsed rock arches that are also a feature of chalk coastlines.
The Needles stacks are the most well known chalk stacks in the United Kingdom and are a popular tourist destination. The Needles Lighthouse is also a notable landmark, situated on the outermost stack
The name ‘Needles’ is thought to be derived from a corruption of the old English word naedl, meaning point or headland.
The Needles is in Isle Of Wight AONB, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
