The Cobb by Steve Johnson
The Cobb
Grade I listed, The Cobb at Lyme Regis is a stunning sea wall that overlooks the English Channel. It is a unique and beloved landmark that has been featured in many famous works of literature, including Jane Austen’s classic novel “Persuasion”. Walking along the Cobb can be an incredibly romantic and breathtaking experience, especially at sunset. The wall is made of limestone which has been weather-worn to a smooth surface over time, giving it an almost timeless look.
Originally of medieval age the original sea wall at The Cobb was built in dry-stone which is pictured in a sketch from the 16th Century. Rebuilding took place in 1783 and later in 1829, while the north wall was built in 1849.
The Cobb is in Dorset AONB, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
