Sidmouth
Sidmouth is a seaside town on the south coast of England in the county of Devon. The town is situated on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. It is an important tourist destination, with visitors coming to enjoy its beaches, cliffs and countryside. The town is also home to a number of events and festivals throughout the year.
Sidmouth has a long history dating back to the Roman era. The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Sedemuda, meaning ‘mouth of the Sid’. In the medieval period, Sidmouth was an important port for trade with France and Ireland.
The town’s fortunes changed in the 18th century when it became a fashionable seaside resort for the wealthy. This resulted in the construction of many grand Georgian houses and hotels. Sidmouth continued to be popular in the Victorian era, when it became known as the ‘Chelsea of Devon’.
Today, Sidmouth is a thriving town with a number of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. It is also home to a number of art galleries and museums. The town’s beaches are popular with both locals and visitors alike, and there are plenty of opportunities for walks along the Jurassic Coast. There are also a number of annual events which take place in Sidmouth, including the Folk Festival and the Regatta.
