Scadbury Estate Country Park

Scadbury Estate Country Park is a 300-acre Local Nature Reserve situated on the eastern edge of Chislehurst in the London Borough of Bromley. The park includes a mix of ancient woodland, grassland, ponds, and meadows, forming part of a wider wildlife corridor that connects to nearby green spaces such as Jubilee Country Park and Petts Wood. It is designated as a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation due to its rich biodiversity and ecological value.

One of the most notable features of the park is the site of Scadbury Manor, a moated medieval manor house first established around the year 1200. The manor was once home to the Walsingham family, including Sir Francis Walsingham, who served as principal secretary to Queen Elizabeth I, and Sir Thomas Walsingham, a patron of the playwright Christopher Marlowe. Today, the remains of the manor, including its moat and the foundations of various buildings, can still be seen within the park.

Scadbury Park is home to a wide range of wildlife and plant species. Ancient oak trees, woodland flowers such as lily-of-the-valley, and protected species like great crested newts contribute to the park’s ecological interest. There are several walking trails through the site, including the Acorn Trail, which allows visitors to explore the natural and historical aspects of the park.

The park is managed by the London Borough of Bromley, with support from local volunteers through the Friends of Scadbury Park group. It is accessible from Old Perry Street and is a valued green space for both nature conservation and public enjoyment. Scadbury Estate Country Park offers a peaceful retreat with historical significance and opportunities to observe wildlife in a semi-rural setting within Greater London.
