Sandwell
Sandwell is a metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, encompassing several towns, including West Bromwich, Oldbury, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury, and Rowley Regis. Historically at the heart of the Black Country’s industrial boom, Sandwell was shaped by coal mining, ironworks, and engineering, becoming one of the most important centres of manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution. Although much of its heavy industry has since declined, its legacy remains in the area’s architecture, transport links, and strong working-class identity.
West Bromwich, the borough’s largest town, has long been a commercial and cultural hub. Once dominated by steelworks and foundries, it has undergone significant regeneration, with the New Square shopping centre and The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion FC, bringing economic and sporting vitality to the town. Oldbury, traditionally an industrial town, remains a key commercial area, housing businesses and manufacturing firms that continue to contribute to the regional economy.
One of Sandwell’s most notable green spaces is Sandwell Valley Country Park, a vast nature reserve that offers woodlands, lakes, and walking trails, providing a contrast to the urban landscape. The park is home to Sandwell Priory, the remains of a medieval Benedictine monastery that gives the borough its name. Smethwick, another of Sandwell’s key towns, played a crucial role in Britain’s industrial heritage, with its canals and factories once forming part of the lifeblood of the Black Country. Today, the town retains its historic links to engineering and is home to a diverse, multicultural community.
Despite the economic shifts of the 20th century, Sandwell has continued to evolve, with investment in housing, transport, and infrastructure helping to modernise the borough. While industry no longer dominates as it once did, Sandwell remains a place with deep historical roots and a strong sense of identity, reflecting both its industrial past and its ongoing transformation.
