The largely demolished remains of the keep, once built of fine masonry, stand on the motte. Linked by a causeway across an inner ditch around the motte, to the barbican.

The castle became Crown Property in the mid-14th Century.

Sandal Castle in today a well-loved, free tourist attraction that also features a visitor centre, walks and picnic areas.
