Penrhos Coastal Park
Penrhos Coastal Park, also known as Penrhos Country Park is near Holyhead, on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales.
The 200 acre park, is an area of outstanding natural beauty and forms part of the Anglesey Coastal Path Network. It provides plenty of space and different areas to explore. There are marked walking trails, woodland walks with hidden follies and circular walks around the headland. The National Cyle Network goes through the park. It is dog friendly, with plenty of space to walk the dog and the beach is also dog friendly. There are several picnic areas. There are good bird watching areas. The wooded area is mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland, with wonderful bluebell carpets to be seen in spring. Flower meadows bloom in the summer, attracting many insects. There is mixed flora and fauna and fresh water habitats.
The park can be found on the former Penrhos Estate. In 1553, Penrhos was granted to John-ap-Owen (also known as John Derwas), with the land consisting of little more than the Penrhos headland. A farm was built on the headland originally named Tudor House and subsequently, Penrhos. The property passed to the Stanley family in 1763, who were a notably family in the area. The Penrhos Estate was the principal seat on Holy Island. Penrhos House was completely remodelled for John Thomas Stanley in the early 1900’s. During World War II, the house and gardens were neglected, with the house becoming ruinous. It was later almost entirely demolished. The estate was bought by Anglesey Aluminium in 1969 and made into a country park in 1971.
Penrhos Coastal Park and Nature Reserve overlooks the sandbanks and mudflats of the Beddmanarch Bay, part of the Beddmanarch and Cymyran Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
