Osterley Park and House

Osterley Park and House is a grand Georgian estate in west London, located in the London Borough of Hounslow. It is one of the last surviving country estates in the capital and is now managed by the National Trust. The estate includes a neoclassical mansion, formal gardens, parkland, and farmland, offering both historical interest and outdoor space for visitors.

The original house on the site was built in the 1570s for Sir Thomas Gresham, a wealthy merchant and founder of the Royal Exchange. In the early 18th century, the estate was acquired by Sir Francis Child, a prominent banker. His descendants later hired architect Robert Adam in 1761 to remodel the house. Adam’s work transformed Osterley into one of Britain’s finest examples of neoclassical design. The project took nearly 20 years and resulted in elegant interiors filled with intricate plasterwork, decorative ceilings, and custom furniture.

Notable rooms inside the house include the Entrance Hall, the Long Gallery, and the Etruscan Dressing Room, all showcasing Adam’s distinctive style. The mansion’s imposing portico and symmetrical layout make it architecturally striking.

The surrounding gardens have been restored to reflect their 18th-century layout. Features include herbaceous borders, ornamental vegetable beds, and a Tudor walled garden. Beyond the gardens, the parkland stretches across wide open spaces with trails for walking and cycling, a lake, and varied wildlife habitats.

Osterley Park is open daily to the public, and the house is typically open Wednesday to Sunday. The grounds can be accessed for free, while entry to the house requires a ticket. There is a café, a shop, and a visitor centre on site. The estate is located near Osterley Underground Station on the Piccadilly Line, making it easy to reach from central London.

Overall, Osterley Park and House offers a blend of art, architecture, and nature, making it a peaceful and culturally rich destination in west London.
