Marton House
Marton House is in The Yorkshire Dales National Park in England.
Marton House in East Marton is a Grade II listed building, originally constructed around the year 1800. Built from rubble stone, parts of which are rendered, it has a traditional stone slate roof and stands two storeys tall. The house has since been converted into multiple residences, but it retains its historic character and many of its original architectural features.
The left section of the house is composed of two bays, which are framed by prominent projecting quoins. At ground level, each bay features a tripartite window set within a segmental archway. These windows are particularly notable for their Ionic pilasters, which act as decorative mullions—an unusual and elegant detail. Directly above, the upper storey also contains tripartite windows, but with simpler flush stone mullions rather than pilasters.
To the right of the main bays, the house continues with two further bays that hold similarly plain windows. In addition to these, there are three single-light windows scattered across the front elevation. Four chimneys rise from the roofline, helping to define the symmetrical and balanced profile of the building.
While detailed records about the original owners or specific historical events tied to Marton House are limited, the architecture reflects the style of the late Georgian period. Its formal design and use of classical details suggest it was originally built as a substantial private residence, likely for a landowning family or a person of local standing. The use of Ionic pilasters and tripartite window arrangements are typical of refined domestic architecture from this era. The conversion to multiple occupancy reflects more recent adaptations but the exterior remains a significant example of early 19th-century rural architecture in North Yorkshire.
