Llandovery Castle - Castell Llanymddyfri
Llandovery Castle - Castell Llanymddyfri is in Brecon Beacons National Park in The Wales.
Llandovery Castle - Castell Llanymddyfri is a late thirteenth-century, Grade II listed castle ruin in the town of Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, Wales.
The ruins occupy a rocky hillock overlooking the town, the River Towy and the surrounding land.
The Normans built a castle in the current location in the early twelfth century and this was rebuilt in stone. It was burnt in the early sixteenth century and never repaired. It changed hands between the Welsh and the English several times.
Today there are remains of the impressive D-shaped tower which, although greatly ruined, still dominates the site. There is a garderobe at first floor level, within the tower. On the north side are traces of a twin-towered gatehouse. The grass- covered foundations of other structures, possibly domestic buildings are also visible.
The castle is freely accessible at all times.
