Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge by Auto Locksmith
Hope Baptist Church - Hebden Bridge
Founded in 1777 by John Fawcett, D.D. the current building, grade II listed is a Town Chapel and Sunday School built in 1857.
Constructed from ashlar with a slate roof and monumental temple front in one tall-storey with giant Corinthian pilasters on moulded bases rising from a shallow plinth. The central doorway is approached by a flight of steps and has double moulded panel doors with fanlight. Framed by pannelled Corinthian pilasters with a plain frieze and moulded triangular pediment above which is the weathered date plaque (1857). Full height windows are to either side of the doorway each with coved reveal and round heads with console keystones. The right-hand wall has five bays articulated by Tuscan pilaster with the same fenestration as the frontage.
There is a lower, single story Sunday School building with three bays and a half-hipped slate root. The Sunday School features rusticated quoins and moulded ashlar eaves cornice. The smaller building has similar windows to the chapel, without the keystones.
The interior of the chapel has galleries on three sides which are supported on cast-iron columns with foliated capitals and fretted side-braces. The entrance vestibule has a mosaic floor which was laid in 1924 and elaborate cast-iron balustrades on the staircases to the gallery. There is a late 17th Century, oak table in the chapel with once belonged to John Fawcett.
