Feltham by AmandaLewis

Feltham

Feltham is a suburban town in West London, located within the London Borough of Hounslow. It lies to the west of central London, close to Heathrow Airport, and forms part of the outer reaches of the capital’s urban sprawl. Historically, Feltham was a village in Middlesex before becoming absorbed into Greater London in the mid-20th century.

The town has a long history, with mentions in records as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. For centuries, it remained a rural area, largely centred on agriculture and market gardening, thanks to its flat terrain and fertile soil. It wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that Feltham began to grow significantly, particularly with the arrival of the railway in the mid-1800s, which improved connections with central London.

Feltham saw major development after the Second World War, with large-scale housing estates built to accommodate the growing London population. Today, the town has a mix of residential areas, light industry, and commercial centres. It is known for its proximity to Heathrow Airport, which has influenced the town’s economy and employment opportunities.

Feltham has undergone significant regeneration in recent decades, including redevelopment of the town centre, new housing, and improved transport links. It is served by Feltham railway station, which provides frequent services to London Waterloo, Reading, and Windsor. The town is also well connected by bus routes and major roads, including the A316 and M3.

The area has several parks and green spaces, including Bedfont Lakes Country Park and Hanworth Park, which provide places for walking, sports, and leisure. Feltham Green, with its pond and open space, sits at the heart of the town and is a remnant of the older village setting.

Feltham is a diverse and multicultural area, with a mix of long-standing residents and newer communities. It continues to evolve as a commuter town with a strong connection to both Heathrow and central London.
