Embsay Crag

Embsay Crag is a prominent gritstone outcrop located above the village of Embsay, near Skipton in North Yorkshire. It forms part of the southern edge of Barden Moor and offers expansive views across the surrounding countryside, including Skipton and the Aire Valley. The crag is easily accessible via a well-used footpath that begins near Embsay Reservoir, a popular starting point for walkers in the area.

The landscape around Embsay Crag is characterised by open moorland, rough grass, and heather, typical of the Yorkshire Dales. Sheep are commonly seen grazing on the slopes, and the area is managed for grouse shooting, with several shooting butts visible across the moor. The crag itself is a solid formation of millstone grit, weathered into angular blocks and short cliffs, with small boulders scattered around its base.

From the summit of the crag, walkers can look out over Embsay Reservoir below, as well as towards Skipton and the distant hills of the southern Dales. On clear days, the view extends far beyond the immediate moorland. The area is also a good spot for observing birds such as curlews and lapwings, especially in the spring and summer months.

Embsay Crag is often included as part of a circular walk around Barden Moor or a longer route towards Barden Tower or Simon’s Seat. It is a relatively modest climb but still provides a rewarding vantage point. The terrain can be boggy in places after rain, and strong winds are common on the exposed upper slopes.

Although not as widely known as some other Yorkshire landmarks, Embsay Crag is a well-loved local feature and provides a quiet alternative to the more heavily visited Dales summits. It is used regularly by walkers and runners, as well as by those interested in local geology and upland habitats.
