Dukinfield
Dukinfield
Dukinfield is a town located in the metropolitan borough of Tameside, Greater Manchester, England. It lies in the foothills of the Pennines on the banks of the River Tame.
Dukinfield’s history dates back to 1219 when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The town’s name is believed to be derived from the Old English ‘Duccan Felle’ meaning Ducan’s field. The area flourished during the Industrial Revolution and formed part of a thriving cotton milling industry. In 1761, John Hyde set up the first steam-powered cotton spinning mill in the area, leading to an influx of workers and rapid population growth.
Today, Dukinfield is known for its attractive mixture of old and new. The town center is filled with independent shops and cafes, as well as historic buildings.
