Crarae Chambered Cairn
Around 3500 BC the small farming community living here built a cairn to house the skeletons of their ancestors. They held ceremonies in front of the cairn, during which the dead may have been brought out of the chamber.
The original cairn would have been much longer, stretching back around 33 m (108 ft) from the east facing entrance. Entered by a narrow gap between the two tallest upright stones, the chamber would have been roofed with slabs and covered with smaller stones. In the 1950s archaeologists found the remains of three people, two of whom had been cremated, and a flint arrowhead in the chamber.
