Clowbridge Reservoir
Clowbridge Reservoir is located near Burnley in Lancashire and was constructed in the mid-19th century to supply water to the surrounding areas. Covering around 88 acres, the reservoir has a capacity of approximately 350 million imperial gallons. It remains an important part of the region’s water infrastructure and also serves as a popular destination for recreation.
The reservoir is surrounded by open moorland and offers a well-maintained circular walking route of about 3.4 kilometres (2.1 miles). The path provides scenic views over the water and surrounding landscape, and is suitable for walkers of all abilities. It typically takes under an hour to complete. Clowbridge is also used for water sports, including sailing and windsurfing, with local activities organised by the Rossendale Valley Sailing Club.
The area has historical significance as well. Nearby stood the hamlet of Gambleside, which dates back to at least 1242. The construction of the reservoir in 1866 led to its decline, and by the early 20th century the hamlet had been completely abandoned. Some remains and traces of the old settlement can still be seen in the surrounding landscape.
Today, Clowbridge Reservoir is valued not only for its practical role in water supply but also as a peaceful outdoor location for walking, wildlife spotting, and connecting with the area’s industrial and rural heritage.
