Cannock Chase
Cannock Chase is an area of woodland and heathland in Staffordshire, England, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Covering approximately 68 square kilometres, it is one of the smallest AONBs in the country but remains an important habitat for wildlife and a popular destination for outdoor activities.
Historically, Cannock Chase was part of a royal hunting forest used by medieval monarchs. Over time, it became a centre for coal mining and military training, with remnants of both still visible in the landscape. The area played a role in both World War I and World War II, with former military camps and cemeteries, including Cannock Chase War Cemetery, which contains the graves of German and Commonwealth soldiers.
The landscape consists of open heathland, dense woodland, and valleys, supporting a diverse range of wildlife, including deer, birds of prey, and rare plant species. It is one of the last remaining habitats for the endangered European nightjar and adder populations in England.
Cannock Chase is well known for its walking, cycling, and horse-riding trails, including the Cannock Chase Mountain Bike Trails, which attract riders from across the country. Popular walking routes include the Heart of England Way and the Staffordshire Way, which pass through the area.
The Chase also contains visitor attractions, such as Birches Valley Forest Centre, which provides information, walking routes, and outdoor activities. There are also historical sites, including Castle Ring, an Iron Age hill fort offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Today, Cannock Chase remains an important recreational and conservation area, balancing public access with the protection of its rare and fragile ecosystems.
Cannock Chase is in Cannock Chase AONB, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
