BBC MediaCityUK

BBC Media City is a major broadcasting hub in Salford, Greater Manchester, UK. It is the headquarters of BBC North and the home of several BBC departments including BBC Sport, BBC Children’s, and BBC Radio 5 Live.

Media City UK is located on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford Quays. It was developed by Peel Group and consists of several buildings, including the main BBC building known as ‘Dock House’, and other buildings such as the Orange and Blue towers.

The architecture of the Media City is modern and striking, with the BBC building resembling a ship. The building was designed by the architectural firm, Wilkinson Eyre, and won the Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize for architecture in 2008.

History

The idea for Media City UK was first proposed in 2003, with the BBC announcing in 2006 that they would be moving a number of their departments to the new site. The construction of the buildings began in 2007, and the BBC officially moved into the building in 2011.
