Askrigg
Askrigg is in The Yorkshire Dales National Park in England.
Askrigg is a small village in Wensleydale and has cobbled streets and a typically North Yorkshire rural charm. It lies in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Askrigg is most famous for its association with fictional vet James Herriot, in the television series All Creatures Great and Small. Askrigg village was the fictional village of Darrowby in the series. The vet’s surgery of Skeldale House is Cringley House in Askrigg and The Kings Arms pub became The Drovers Arms pub in the series.
Askrigg is also famous for being the first place in Wensleydale to have electric light. In 1908 an entrepreneur named William Burton used machinery at a nearby mill to generate electricity. This continued until 1948, when it was put onto the National Grid. The remnants of the mill can be seen today.
There are many walks from Askrigg. The most popular takes you to Mill Gill Force and Whitfield Gill. It is full of spectacular scenery and takes in three waterfalls, a disused quarry and the edge of Whitfield Scar.
