Shaly Dingle

Part of the West Pennine Moors, Winter Hill itself is a well-known area for hiking and other outdoor activities, but tucked away on the north slopes, on the edge of the open-access area, Shaly Dingle not so much.

Hole Bottom

Hole Bottom was once a quaint hamlet perched atop Winter Hill.

Hole Bottom Mining Area

The Hole Bottom area was mined around the mid 19th to 20th Centuries. Focussing on an area to the east of the current mast road and from the south of Hole Bottom and northwards towards the area of the Five Houses.

Crooked Edge Hill

Crooked Edge Hill, or Two Lads is a small peak on the southwestern slopes of Winter Hill.

Whimberry Hill

Whimberry Hill is a small peak, off the eastern side of Winter Hill.

Burnt Edge

Burnt Edge is a gritstone ridge on the south part of Winter Hill,

Turton Moor

A patch of post-industrial, peat moorland to the north of Bolton, plenty of industrial archaeology, wide open moorland with an abundance of wildlife and some prehistoric remains.

Owshaw Clough

A small clough where the Stones Bank Brook starts at the confluence of Holden's Brook and Rushtons Brook on Turton Moor.

Aushaw Moss

An upland former moss cutting area, now part of the West Pennine Moors S.S.S.I.

The Turton Reservoirs

A chain of three reservoirs in the Turton area with good walking routes and car park facilities and a cafe at the Jumbles reservoir.

Turton and Entwistle Reservoir

A scenic reservoir partially surrounded by pine woods that give a look of somewhere much further north.

Fox Hill Plantation

A plantation of coniferous trees on the north shore of Turton and Entwistle Reservoir.

Yarnsdale

A small area around a wooded valley where the Cadshaw Brook enters Turton and Entwistle Reservoir.

Yarnsdale Delf

A huge quarry face around the Cadshaw Brook at Yarnsdale just beside the footpath.

Brownfields Quarry

A small 18th Century quarry above Yarnsdale, now overgrown and a good spot for nature.

The Naze

The Naze rises to a plateau above Whittlestone Head and Wayoh Reservoir and is noticeably modified by industry. A large disused quarry and even larger looking spoil create the outline of the hill most often seen.

Walker Fold Woods

Walker Fold Woods is a great little woodland trail with a good variety of trees including evergreen and native species.

Ciggie Tunnel

An old brick-lined tunnel carrying Dean Brook below Walker Fold Road above Bolton.

Raveden Clough

A small wooded valley, scenic with wildlife, part of a larger woodland area.

Roscow's Tenement Clough

A small wooded clough leading up to the open moorland on Winter Hill above Bolton.

Rivington

The County Parish of Rivington is quite large and contains the village, most of the “three lakes”, the pike and parts of Winter Hill as far as the River Douglas near Horwich.

Rivington Pike

Written records of 'Roun Pike' stretch back to 1280, though it is entirely feasible the Pike became part of England's integral beacon defence network over a century earlier under the instigation of the Earl of Chester after the Scottish raids of 1138.

Rivington Hall Wood

An area of woodland and former parkland of Rivington Hall.

Tigers Clough

Tigers Clough is supposedly named after an illegal drinking establishment that once occupied a spot near to the Knoll Bleach Works in the 19th Century, having two tigers on a sign outside.

Jepsons Clough

Jepson’s Clough is a small woodland area with the River Douglas still as a small stream passing through. The rocky clough from which the area gets its name is scenic and leads on to a small waterfall with interesting geological features.

Wilderswood

A small woodland on the slopes of Winter Hill above Horwich.

Wilderswood Plantation

A plantation of beech, alder, Lodgepole and Corsican pines pines on the west side of Wilderswood above Horwich.

Moses Gate Country Park

A large and spacious country park set around the Crompton Lodges and along the River Croal.

Ladyshore

A small post-industrial, nature area in a bend of the River Irwell.

Horrocks Wood

An area of mixed woodland on the slopes of Winter Hill above Bolton, with walking paths throughout and an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife.

Piethorne Valley

Piethorne Valley is an actively farmed area with three large reservoirs and a number of smaller ones. Piethorne Valley is easy to access with a number of hiking trails, moorland and woodland areas. The Pennine Bridleway also passes through the Piethorne Valley.
