A patch of post-industrial, peat moorland to the north of Bolton, plenty of industrial archaeology, wide open moorland with an abundance of wildlife and some prehistoric remains.
Tigers Clough
Tigers Clough is supposedly named after an illegal drinking establishment that once occupied a spot near to the Knoll Bleach Works in the 19th Century, having two tigers on a sign outside.
Rivington Pike
Written records of ‘Roun Pike’ stretch back to 1280, though it is entirely feasible the Pike became part of England’s integral beacon defence network over a century earlier under the instigation of the Earl of Chester after the Scottish raids of 1138.
Rivington
The County Parish of Rivington is quite large and contains the village, most of the “three lakes”, the pike and parts of Winter Hill as far as the River Douglas near Horwich.
Lead Mines Clough
Lead Mines Clough is located around a mineral vein that has infilled along a geological fault line. The area was mined extensively in the past and there are obvious bell pits on the higher ground and an excellent example of later mine workings that was restored by volunteers.
Jepsons Clough
Jepson’s Clough is a small woodland area with the River Douglas still as a small stream passing through. The rocky clough from which the area gets its name is scenic and leads on to a small waterfall with interesting geological features.
Gordale Scar
Gordale Scar is an impressively deep, limestone gorge featuring large rocky waterfalls.
Piethorne Valley
Piethorne Valley is an actively farmed area with three large reservoirs and a number of smaller ones. Piethorne Valley is easy to access with a number of hiking trails, moorland and woodland areas. The Pennine Bridleway also passes through the Piethorne Valley.
The Malvern Hills
The Malvern Hills are a prominent range of hills dominating the much flatter landscape to the East and giving excellent views towards the higher ground of the Welsh border.
