Isle Of Wight AONB
Much of the island is included in the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which was designated in 1963. The AONB covers an area of approximately 190 km2, about half the island’s total area, making it one of the largest AONBs in England and Wales.
The Isle of Wight AONB is notable for its variety of landscapes. The island’s central and southern downlands are included in the AONB, as well as much of its famous coastline. The Needles, a group of small chalk stacks just off the coast, are also part of the AONB.
On the north coast, the AONB protects the low clay cliffs, salt-marsh and mud-flats of the Hamstead Heritage Coast. Places to Visit in the Isle of Wight AONB
Culver Down: A chalk downland, home to rare wildflowers and butterflies. There are great views of the island from the top of Culver Down.
Whitecliff Bay: A beautiful sandy beach, popular with families. The bay is surrounded by high cliffs, which are part of the AONB.
The Needles: The famous chalk stacks off the Isle of Wight’s western tip. Visitors can take a chairlift up to the top of the Needles for stunning views.
Carisbrooke Castle: A medieval castle, once prison to Charles I. Carisbrooke Castle is set in large grounds, which are part of the Isle of Wight
